Cantigny Gardens Reopen to Public

On July 14, 2018, Cantigny Gardens, which have been closed to visitors since fall of 2017, reopened to the public with great excitement. Sasaki led the landscape design for the renovation of the gardens and designers from the team were onsite to partake in the opening celebrations. After a few brief remarks, guests were invited to explore the fully redesigned and replanted gardens, accompanied by Cantigny Park horticulture experts ready to answer questions. “Besides beauty and functionality, the new gardens offer improved access for all Cantigny visitors,” said Scott Witte, director of horticulture at Cantigny Park.

The opening of the gardens was a key milestone in Cantigny Park’s ongoing Project New Leaf, a five-year revitalization effort that began in 2016. The renovated gardens showcase several beautifully distinct features, such as the Rose Garden that contains over 60 different rose varieties and the Pond Garden that harbors thousands of native aquatic plants. The gardens also feature improved access, with new ramps and stroller-friendly paving throughout.

“The legacy of public parks in the United States is defined by the belief that the well-being of communities is enriched and made stronger through our collective experience of beautiful landscapes and gardens,” said Joe Hibbard, FASLA, principal and landscape architect at Sasaki. “Cantigny Park is, and continues to be, an important part of that legacy. The renewal of the Cantigny Gardens marks a reaffirmation of this institution and its values; while at the same time the renewed gardens are a tangible, forward-looking expression of Cantigny’s commitment to the future. It is our hope that people will have many years of satisfying experiences with friends and family in these wonderful gardens.”
