How Are Gardens and Arboreta Adapting to COVID-19?

With the American Public Gardens Association annual conference moving to a digital platform for 2020, landscape ecologist Andrew Sell was asked to re-invent the conference’s “Celebrate Design!” event into the digital panel dialogue: “Celebrate Design! For a Changed World.”

With 12 public garden leaders and fellow designers, Sell led a discussion on how gardens and arboreta are adapting to COVID-19 through design and master planning. Three separate one-hour long conversations were distilled into a 60 minute conversation that covered the ways design is being harnessed to combat issues around social distancing, equitable access to gardens during quarantine, and how pandemics are now being integrated into public garden master plans and community engagement efforts.

Sell serves as the Vice-Chair of the American Public Gardens Association’s Design & Planning Community.
