The Larry H. Miller Company, with the support of a broad and diverse coalition of community leaders, is leading the development of approximately 100+ acres in the heart of Salt Lake City’s Westside neighborhood. This site, known as the Power District, offers sweeping views of the downtown skyline and Wasatch Mountains. Sasaki is incorporating several area master plans that have been studied over the years to coalesce in a unified vision for the Capital City’s Westside community.

The new master plan elevates a one-of-a-kind location into a premier mixed-use destination. It aims to create enriching experiences, celebrate the area’s cultural and agricultural heritage, and offer families and visitors meaningful amenities and opportunities for connection. This approach ensures that new spaces not only meet today’s needs but also respect and enhance the community and state for future generations. Plans also include a community-driven initiative to restore a one-mile loop within a half-mile stretch of the Jordan River at North Temple on the west side of Salt Lake City.

The Power District encompasses  the lands bounded by North Temple Street, the Jordan River, the Union Pacific rail corridor, and Redwood Road. Key destinations within the broader planning area include the Utah State Fairpark, as well as the potential for a Major League Baseball Park.

Guided by the Jordan River

Before diving into the depths of urban development, work on the Power District is starting with the Jordan River because this river is the origin story of Salt Lake City itself. The Power District will bring the city back to a riverfront energized with music, local food, business and everyday life. And coordinating with other restoration efforts, the district will help make the river environmentally whole and safely activated for the public.

Near the river’s edge sits the proposed Major League Baseball Park, a magnet for bringing  the community together. The location of this venue is strategically designed to spill into the riverfront and the proposed green loop, a meandering path connecting the development blocks of the Power District to the riverwalk.

A Multi-modal Lifestyle

Beyond connectivity, the River loop provides the Power District with a key amenity; walkability. Larry H. Miller Real Estate’s vision is to create a hub where one can safely walk from home to work, to game day, and back home. With a dense mix of office, hospitality, multi-family residential, retail, and entertainment uses, the master plan establishes a framework of streets, development parcels and open spaces that emphasize the critical importance of the public realm strategy as the foundation of a vibrant and authentic place within Salt Lake City.

The design of a multi-modal network of pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicular connections forges new linkages within the district and to the surrounding neighborhoods. By prioritizing the public realm as a design principle the master plan creates a signature identity for the Power District, while integrating it within the context of the broader Westside community.

The Power District master plan illustrates a balanced mix of uses to support a 24/7 urban experience for employees, residents, and visitors. The anticipated program west of the Jordan River anticipates more than 6 million square feet of office, hospitality, multi-family residential, retail, and entertainment uses. This complementary mix of uses, coupled with the ambitious public realm concept and prime location on the Trax Greenline between the airport and downtown Salt Lake reinforces the Power District as a great place to live, work, play, learn, and invest for a full spectrum of users.
