Sasaki’s Design for The Ellinikon Park Awarded in Carbon, Climate & Energy Category by World Architecture Festival Awards

World Architecture Festival is the largest global live awards event for designers where finalists present their projects live to a panel of judges at the festival. This year’s awards program included 44 categories across completed buildings, future projects, landscapes, and interiors, and The Ellinikon Park project has won in the Carbon, Climate & Energy category alongside being shortlisted for the Future Projects – Masterplanning category

The decommissioning of the former Athens International Airport presented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform obsolete infrastructure into a resilient, climate-positive public landscape. Design decisions were grounded in the overarching goal of achieving carbon neutrality within 35 years, beginning with detailed carbon assessments and a meticulous analysis process which included extensive soil and concrete testing, geotechnical borings, and field surveys of established vegetation across the site. The Ellinikon Park provides accessible, inclusive spaces for solace, play, civic celebration, and democratic expression within an oasis of biodiversity. The design centered a holistic carbon perspective, rigorously researching local ecosystems, carbon sequestration ability, carbon carrying capacity, and life cycle assessments for materials and manufacturing.

We are very excited for the opportunity to send our design team to present this project to the panel of judges at WAF in Singapore. Congratulations to LAMDA Development and the design team at Sasaki for this incredible recognition!
