Smart Cities Start with Smart Design

In the journal Landscape Architecture, principal Dennis Pieprz, Honorary ASLA and associate principal Paul Schlapobersky, AIA, LEED AP argue the importance of focusing on physical design when designing Smart Cities.

“Successful smart cities must fundamentally first uphold the basic conditions that have always characterized great cities,” they write. “They must be the tablet upon which the richness and complexity of human life can be written and rewritten a thousand times over. The only thing that enables this is the inherent framework of the city.”

Using two case studies by Sasaki within the Greater Toronto Area, Lakeview Village and Veraine, Pieprz and Schlapobersky demonstrate how Sasaki is staying true to the principles of physical urban design in Smart City development.
