Sasaki Wins AIA New England Design Award for Bristol CC Building

Sasaki was recognized with a Citation Award at the 2020 AIA New England Design Awards for the John J. Sbrega Health and Science Building, in the Energy & Carbon category. It is a great acknowledgement, especially in this category given the building’s numerous energy conservation strategies.

The building acts as an educational resource shared by multiple disciplines, representing the translation of basic science to its application in the health professions, and accommodating instructional labs for biology, chemistry, nursing, clinical laboratory science, medical assisting, and dental hygiene. The team made a strategic investment to develop a Zero Net Energy design, which balances annual energy consumption with renewable energy generation on site. Located at the edge of the college’s main lawn with close proximity to the campus entrance, the building acts not only as a public-facing gateway, but also as a beacon for sustainable design on campus.

Jury comments included:

“The moves with the masses of the building are smart. They create different kinds of spaces at that central atrium.”

“It’s designed as a Zero Net Energy building… within the awards, I think there needs to be these types of projects. Not just LEED Platinum, or LEED Gold, but there needs to be large buildings that are striving for Zero Net Energy compliance.”

“For a health and science building, [this is] a pretty laudable achievement.”

We’re proud to be recognized by AIANE along with all the other winning projects and firms.
