Sasaki has been selected by the City of West Hollywood to develop a blueprint for addressing urgent housing issues in the region. The selection underscores Sasaki’s belief that stable and affordable housing is a basic human right that can transform health, education and local economies.
As part of the city’s 6th Cycle Housing Element, which covers the planning years from 2021 to 2029, Sasaki’s work will help West Hollywood maintain its existing housing stock, assess the needs of diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups, and encourage the construction of affordable housing units.Â
Sasaki will examine current housing policy, standards, and zoning criteria to identify barriers to housing development and to propose improvements. By studying how housing is spread across the city and simulating different housing types, the design team will determine best practices for housing planning, taking into account financial, spatial, and geographic concerns of West Hollywood residents.Â
“West Hollywood has a vibrant legacy of civic action and progressive planning,” says architect and associate principal Ian Dickenson. “We’re committed to preserving the unique cultural landscape of the area and working with communities to help expand opportunity throughout the city.”
Sasaki’s research is driven by a desire to disrupt long standing patterns of housing segregation. Through taking stock of diverse community needs and encouraging sustainable construction and preservation practices, Sasaki will help chart a more equitable future for the City of West Hollywood.Â
