Firms self-reported data from the 2017 fiscal year for consideration. Design scores took into account design quality, research, awards, pro-bono work, and licensure. Sustainability rankings were derived from energy and water metrics, employee certifications, building certifications, participation in the AIA’s 2030 Commitment, and evaluation of an exemplary green project submitted by the firm. Business considerations included net revenue per employee, profitability, firm diversity, employee benefits, and changes in headcount.
