Foothill College Master Plan

The landscape for this community college in Los Altos, California was designed by Hideo Sasaki and Peter Walker, and further showcases the influence of neo-Japanese gardens on their work. The campus was widely recognized for its groundbreaking aesthetics.
Foothill College, as part of the State of California’s integrated school system, was designed for an enrollment of 3,000 students. The rolling topography and views of the foothills influenced the design of the buildings and grounds.
Classrooms are clustered around open courts, and the buildings are grouped as in a small village. Exterior corridors connect a series of small open courts in a sequence of spaces that ends in the heart of the campus, in a large sunken court.
