Dick Galehouse

Dick joined Sasaki full time in 1961 and contributed to the firm’s planning practice as principal and senior planner. His project work, writing for publication, and speaking has focused on planning and design regarding new communities, mixed use, urban regeneration, environmental issues, and higher education.

He has gained great satisfaction from his success in resolving difficult environmental issues, gaining land use entitlements, and developing economically feasible planning and design solutions for his projects. He has particularly enjoyed the challenges presented by the many Urban Land Institute Advisory Services Panels that he has served on—from the flood recovery plan for New Orleans to the redevelopment of the Kai Tak airport site in Hong Kong.

Dick has been an active member of the Urban Land Institute since 1979, and is also a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Society for College and University Planning, the American Planning Association, and Lambda Alpha International. He has been a speaker for these organizations and authored numerous articles for Urban Land and Landscape Architecture. In addition, Dick is the author of the book, The Power of the Plan, Building a University in Historic Columbia, South Carolina, published by the University of South Carolina Press.

In addition to his involvement in numerous professional organizations, Dick donated his 50 years of design work at Sasaki to his alma mater, Notre Dame University, enriching the education of students for years to come. Dick holds a Masters degree in City and Regional Planning from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame.
