Sasaki Campus Projects Bring Beautiful, Sustainable Design to the Forefront
At Sasaki, we believe design and sustainability should go hand in hand, no matter the project scale or discipline. Two Sasaki projects, Deerfield Academy Athletics Complex and Harvard Artlab, have been recognized for both design excellence and rigorous sustainability standards.
These projects demonstrate Sasaki’s belief that design excellence and sustainability work together as holistic, integrated solutions to help our clients and communities thrive.
Both projects have recently been celebrated by the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) Design Awards: each project was honored with a 2019 Honor Awards for Design Excellence. Additionally, the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) New England council recognized Deerfield Athletic Complex with one of four Honor Awards, the top designation for this program.
Just this past year, the Harvard ArtLab was shortlisted as one of three nominees for U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC )MA’s Green Building of the Year. The building relies entirely on electricity—no fossil fuels are supplied to the building. Energy is produced on site via a roof mounted photovoltaic array, and the building is designed with the goal of achieving Zero-Net-Energy. This multi-use space by Sasaki, architect of record, and Barkow Leibinger, architect, was completed in 2018.
In October 2019, the Deerfield Athletic Complex was officially certified as a LEED Gold project. The 132,000-square-foot addition to the existing sports complex meets holistic sustainable criteria for reducing whole building energy performance and lowering water usage.
