Two Sasaki Projects Receive Honorable Mentions from Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards

The Transformation of the Design School at Anant National University (ANU) and Xuhui Runway Park were recognized in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards. ANU Design School Transformation received an Honorable Mention in the Learning category, and Xuhui Runway Park received an Honorable Mention in the Cities category.

The awards recognize people, teams, and companies solving problems through design. One of the most sought-after design awards in the industry, Innovation by Design is the only competition to honor creative work at the intersection of design, business, and innovation.

The ANU Design School Transformation updates an existing building to create a 21st century, collaborative teaching and learning environment. The new building houses a diverse array of design studios, seminar rooms, a new learning commons, a gallery, a maker space, and a clay workshop, all with a strong social and communal heart. “We are honored to receive recognition from Fast Company for the Transformation of the Design School at ANU,” said urban design principal Romil Sheth. “Our master planning and architecture work at ANU represents an innovative approach to developing 21st century design learning spaces.”

Xuhui Runway Park converts a former airport runway into a model for the sustainable urban park by preserving pieces of the site’s past. To reflect the site’s previous history as an airport, the design mimics the motion of a runway, creating diverse linear spaces for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians by organizing the park and street into one interconnected sequence at a runway scale. The park is mainland China’s first SITES Gold project. “We’re thrilled that Xuhui Runway Park was chosen among so many other innovative designs,” said Dou Zhang ASLA, PLA, LEED AP BD+C, SITES AP, director of Sasaki’s Shanghai office.
