Sasaki Projects Shortlisted for MIPIM Asia Awards

Two Sasaki projects are shortlisted for the prestigious MIPIM Asia Awards 2018, selected from over 124 entries representing 14 countries in the Asia Pacific region. Shortlisted projects will be designated gold, silver, or bronze following a vote by special delegates at the MIPIM Asia Awards Ceremony on November 28.

Sasaki’s 798 Arts District Vision Plan, a pioneering adaptive reuse plan completed in 2007, helped to transform a district of abandoned factories into the third most-visited destination in Beijing. A finalist for MIPIM’s Best Urban Regeneration Project, the project was additionally recognized with the American Planning Association’s Pierre L’Enfant International Planning Excellence Award and Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards in 2018.

Shanghai Hongkou Urban Catalyst: Stadium, Park and Urban Connectors was selected for the MIPIM Best Chinese Futura Project shortlist. The project proposes renovating China’s first professional soccer stadium into a world-class sports center that not only hosts professional events but also serves the local citizens. The design of the 35 hectares site takes a holistic approach to seamlessly integrate the stadium, adjacent neighborhoods, and a historic park and architecture district

“Recognition from MIPIM is always a humbling honor, and this year we are proud to be receiving two awards” says Sasaki principal Michael Grove, ASLA. “The 798 Arts District illustrates how a thoughtful framework plan can guide development in an authentic, culturally relevant, and meaningful way over time.”

Sasaki principal Tao Zhang, ASLA, notes that “Hongkou will create a place for urban vibrancy and landscape tranquility to converge, and where the area’s rich history merges with innovation.”

This is Sasaki’s 3rd consecutive year receiving awards from MIPIM, with the Sunqiao Urban Agriculture District and Suzhou Creek winning in 2017, and Forest City Malaysia and Zhangjiabang Park receiving honors in 2016. “It is an honor to have contributed our ideas to these projects, and these awards inspire us to continue Sasaki’s legacy of transformative design,” says Zhang.
