Colby College Athletics and Recreation Center Honored by AIA New England

Sasaki teamed with Hopkins Architects for the design and implementation of the 350,000-square-foot Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center at Colby College. The project recently received a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) New England as part of their annual Design Awards program which seeks to celebrate architects from, and architecture in, New England.

The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center is a state-of-the-art facility that integrates indoor competition venues, training areas, and other support spaces to serve the college’s athletics, recreation, and wellness programs. The facility is arranged around a central courtyard that connects all levels and provides clarity and orientation for visitors and everyday users. The project has achieved LEED Platinum certification and is the first SITES certified project in Maine and the first SITES gold project in New England.

The center was the largest building project in Maine at the time of construction and puts the college at the forefront of Division III athletics and as a leader in athletics facility program, quality, and performance, a key aim for the project. The new building and surrounding landscape are the epicenter for athletics, recreation, health, and wellness on campus.

Congratulations to the Sasaki + Hopkins team and to all the other winning projects! We are honored to have been recognized amongst all the incredible entries.
