Colby College Athletic & Recreation Center Named Facility of Merit by Athletic Business

Sasaki is proud to announce that our Colby College Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center (HAARC) was named a Facility of Merit by Athletic Business for 2021.

The project is in partnership with Hopkins Architects based in London. The HAARC is one of ten projects selected as Facilities of Merit this year from the large pool of submitted projects. We are proud to be recognized amongst such stellar competition.

More about the project

The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center at Colby College is a new 350,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that transcends conventional athletics and recreation center design, efficiently and elegantly integrating all of Colby’s indoor competition venues, training areas, and other support spaces to comprehensively serve every athletics, recreation, and wellness program on campus. Sited on land formerly occupied by playing fields at the campus’ northwestern edge, the building provides a new gateway to the campus. It is organized around a central courtyard that connects all three levels and provides clarity and orientation for both visitors and everyday users. The project is expected to achieve a minimum of LEED Gold certification and is part of a cohesive district representing the cutting-edge of SITES-certified landscape design and implementation.

Congratulations to our Sasaki project team, our partners at Hopkins Architects, and to the nine other winning projects for the 2021 AB Facilities of Merit.

About Athletic Business Facilities of Merit

Each summer, a rotating panel of leading architects convenes for two days to review all entries from the June issue and choose 10 facilities to receive the coveted Facility of Merit Awards, announced in the October issue of Athletic Business and presented at the annual Athletic Business Show.

Facilities are selected on the basis of plan efficiency; functional relationships and measures taken to maximize use of space; interior finishes, detailing and color schemes; exterior design; relationship of building to site; and cost of construction for value received.
