The planned community of Palava is an innovative urban district that will become a leading example of mixed-use, sustainable planning, and design in India. Based on research of livable cities and environments around the world, this area is designed to provide over 450,000 residents, workers, and visitors a wide variety of settings for daily life. The plan is structured by an ecological response to the beautiful landscape setting with an array of parks, squares, and civic spaces. With over 18,000,000 square meters of development, Palava includes a range of dwelling types, work places, schools, social clubs, sports and entertainment venues, retail, research and development, and a university. The success of Sasaki’s work on Palava is reflected in the client’s decision to move forward with the detailed design and construction of the first phase of the project. Phase I captures 350 acres out of a total site area of 2,780 acres and represents the first step towards a more sustainable future for high-quality living in India.

Sasaki collaborated with one of the world’s leading engineering, infrastructure, and sustainability firms on the sustainability approach, transit and transportation plan, and innovative infrastructure. Each home or place of work is less than a two minute walk to recreation areas and open space. Sasaki also worked to understand the numerous site constraints—divided parcels, overhead and underground utilities, waterways, and existing and future transportation networks—and integrate all of these elements into a humane, sustainable environment that represents a higher quality of living for residents in India is one of the primary innovations of this project. A comprehensive stormwater management system is part of the overall planning and design strategy.

Master planning in India requires a profound understanding of the complexities of infrastructure, site development, existing conditions, and the bureaucratic process. Sasaki’s previous experience in India—both with this client and with other leading development companies—was critical in the selection process and to the success of the project.
