Hongxing Oceanfront CommunityDalian, China
The master plan for the Hongxing Oceanfront Community balances new development, public open space, and ecological conservation. It is an example of how growth can be accommodated, the public realm can be celebrated, and the quality of the environment can be restored to create a sustainable community that will become a model for the continued growth of Dalian.
The site consists of three major valleys, steep oceanfront cliffs, and a protected cove. Existing open space systems and ecological connections were enhanced to create links between various landscape communities. The plan located development on the southern slopes to maximize solar orientation, minimize impacts to topography, and enhance views to the water. Northern slopes are preserved to protect the habitat of a variety of native plants and wildlife, and their conservation contributes to the health of the watershed while also preserving views to nature for the neighborhoods on the southern hillsides. At the valley floor, neighborhood parks provide for community recreation while also treating stormwater runoff. On the flat lands at the north, a mixed-use district is sited adjacent to Dalian’s high density “new development zone”. Lined with retail, restaurants, hotels, and cultural facilities, the cove waterfront will be a vibrant downtown with an active street life, becoming a destination for the entire district.
