MonitorSan Francisco, CA
Monitor’s goals were as follows:
- To provide a new office that has the quality of the Monitor Cambridge Global Headquarters, but, allows the expression of the Northern California location to be evident.
- To bring together the newest acquired company, the Global Business Network, with the other groups of the existing San Francisco office into one space with a design that allows the eclectic mix of groups to be expressed within the new space.
- To have a design comprised mostly of all private offices yet enhances collaboration among the colleagues, and provides a variety of social learning and work spaces to accommodate and support up to 100 consultants.
The plan is a grid of ‘cross streets’, intersected by a diagonal ‘Main Street’ terminating at two elliptical community spaces. This allows for a variety of shapes and views that relieves a potentially monotonous floor plan of this block-long, fairly deep floor plate. The elliptical community spaces create areas of gathering, crossing, and social learning. The design’s intent is to nurture Monitor’s appreciation that learning and insight come from opportunistic and spontaneous interactions. Bright accent paint colors mimic the regional landscape: ‘Golden Gate’ red, ‘artichoke’ green, ‘garlic’ white, ‘poppy’ orange, ‘grassy hills’ gold, ‘bay water’ blue, ‘mustard’ yellow, and ‘fog’ gray.
.
The resulting design has a rich texture of materials and colors, and provides an exciting visual layering of spaces and transparencies; Thus reflecting the different personalities of the many Monitor's coming together to collaborate on their work.
