Hershey Entertainment and Resort Company consolidated their headquarters in a historic building at the corner of Chocolate and Park Avenues in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The decision was made to renovate the industrial 1915 Hershey Press Building as part of revitalizing Hershey’s downtown. Sasaki designed the building renovation as well as the interiors of Hershey’s 50,000 square foot headquarters space.
Sasaki’s goal was to make the historic building visible in the headquarters space by using original details whenever possible. The ornate main stair leads visitors to Hershey’s reception area, and spaces were opened up to reveal the original concrete ceiling and column capitals. The original steel windows were reused on the interior to bring natural light through perimeter spaces and deep into the floor.
The design features honest materials like Pennsylvania bluestone and rich natural cherry; details are unfussy and straightforward. The boardroom is encased in horizontal wood cladding in a deep batten; inside, the suede-upholstered walls are simple but sumptuous. The result is a fresh, contemporary space which is sophisticated and elegant without being pretentious.
