Dallas Area Rapid Transit
Dallas, TX

Sasaki created the urban design framework and the landscape architecture for a mile-long transitway mall, which links several districts with the downtown core and forms a major open space corridor. The entire length of the mall is unified with street trees, special streetscape treatments, and a dynamic public arts program. Public squares mark the location of each transit station, while blocks between stations are designed to distinguish the transitway, local access, and pedestrian zones. These improvements were designed to support the development of ground-level retail uses, to animate the street, and to provide a safe environment during off-peak hours.

Sasaki Associates provided project management, urban design, and landscape architecture services for the design and construction of this award-winning $48 million transitway mall. As prime consultant to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Authority, Sasaki coordinated the work of a team of subconsultants, including architects, civil engineers, structural engineers, mechanical/electrical engineers and plumbing engineers, and lighting designers. Sasaki’s interdisciplinary design approach and innovative construction phasing plan ensured that a collaborative public art design process would be implemented and that any adverse impacts to local merchants would be minimized.
