Columbus Riverfront Vision PlanColumbus, OH
The Riverfront Vision Plan created a framework for public, institutional, and private investment along a nine-mile riverfront corridor in downtown Columbus. This new recreational open space corridor connects the Ohio State University campus, residential areas, the commercial downtown, and several existing city parks. The plan emphasizes public access along the banks of the river as well as boating and other activities on the river. The connections down to the water’s edge and across the river are critical elements of the plan, achieving the goals of linking districts and extending the value of the riverfront into the adjacent neighborhoods. In conjunction with the park expansion, a number of industrial areas will be reclaimed to create new neighborhoods and mixed-use districts that are more compatible with the riverfront parklands.
Based on the recommendations in the Vision Plan, several new riverfront parks have been opened in the downtown area, including the parklands at the Center of Science and Industry and the Veteran's Memorial Auditorium. Sasaki assisted the City in finding funding for these significant open spaces, which are being developed as part of a larger set of floodwall improvements. For the Riverfront Vision Plan, Sasaki provided urban design, landscape architecture, and planning services, including the process of building consensus for the plan. Sasaki Associates provided full landscape architectural services for the COSI and Memorial Auditorium riverfront parks.
