Doosan 100 Year ParkSeoul, South Korea
Sasaki Associates led a charrette to create a conceptual design for a small urban park in historic downtown Seoul. The objective of the project was to utilize the historic site to create a memorable monument to celebrate the past, present and future accomplishments of Doosan. The park was intended to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Doosan Corporation, Korea’s oldest company. The program for the park included a representation of the original storefront facade, a time capsule, and a representation of the numbers 100 and 27, to indicate the number of years and the number of Doosan subsidiary companies, respectively.
The 100 square meter urban park consists of a continuous, parabolic granite wall, a flowerbed and a cylindrical tower 25 meters in height located in the center of the site. The granite wall provides a vertical element for the inscriptions of the names of the 27 subsidiary companies, symbolizing the unity (on a single wall) yet uniqueness of each company. The tower, supported by three columns and fabricated of stainless steel, is encircled with 100 small-diameter metal rods that form a ring around the tower as it ascends skyward. Centered directly below the tower is the time capsule, which is flush with the pavement. The time capsule and the interior of the tower are illuminated by lights positioned at the top of the tower to create a ‘‘cone of light’‘ cascading down upon the capsule. The park was dedicated in August of 1996, on the 100-year anniversary of Doosan Corporation.
