The city of Charleston, South Carolina sought to develop a five-acre site for a pier and related facilities to promote the development of the fishing industry and to restore existing piers and docking facilities damaged by Hurricane Hugo. Continuing a decades-long relationship with the city, Sasaki conducted a feasibility study, provided initial concepts, and completed final designs for the development of the Charleston Maritime Center.
The center is a multi-use facility for commercial fishing, shrimping, and the recreational needs of tour boats for the Harbour Islands. The commercial pier is port of call for 28 shrimping vessels ranging in size from 60 to 80 feet. A packing and wholesale facility for the local catch is included on the lower level.
The second pier, dedicated to recreational boating, is port of call for the International Around Alon yachting race. The facility is designed for maximum flexibility to accommodate the changing needs of the maritime industry. Since the entire project is located within the 100-year flood zone, the design of the facility, including all material selection, meets strict FEMA guidelines. The shrimp packing facility—which includes a cooler, freezer, and 100-ton ice making machine—was designed to survive a 100-year storm with minimal down time after the fact.
