Magic Beans is a rapidly growing family-owned baby gear and toy retailer. With a devoted following and well-developed brand identity, the company enjoys significant success in its market. When it came time to expand from its original location in Brookline, Massachusetts, the owners sought out the team of Sasaki and Continuum to develop store models for two new Massachusetts locations in Wellesley and Hingham. The design challenge was create a fresh physical environment for a store that had a strong existing brand. Sasaki and Continuum were able to create contemporary and appealing spaces that are still identifiable and tied to their origins. The concept is also easy to replicate to accommodate the hope that these would be the first two stores of a larger expansion effort. The project was achieved within a small budget and on a quick schedule.
Working collaboratively with Continuum, Sasaki developed a solution that focuses on a fun and engaging environment with different zones to help customers navigate merchandise. These zones include areas for the display of densely packed merchandise such as games and more open areas for items such as strollers and baby furniture. Areas for children to play and other inventive elements allow children to engage with the store itself.
Building off the colorful brand identity of Magic Beans, the stores incorporate bright colors and graphics in a modern design. Elements of the base building, including exposed ductwork and infrastructure, are incorporated as exciting and unique visual elements. The team developed new, easily replicable fixtures that have become a key component of the brand's physical expression and can be quickly produced for future locations.
