Sasaki’s Yuqiao Innovation Cluster was featured in an article published by Urban Land, the magazine of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Amid a shift in Chinese urbanism, the article points to the Yuqiao Innovation Cluster as a leading example of the movement to design people-oriented urban districts, rich with public spaces, transit and pedestrian connections, and a strong sense of place.
Julian Wei, AIA, a director in Sasaki's Shanghai office, explained in the article that the design team viewed the public realm as foundational to the design and success of Yuqiao as an innovation district. “The open space creates a continuity of active parks, streets, and plazas, but also reflects the activity within the buildings,” said Wei, creating a feeling of community, as well as a model for sustainable urbanism in China.
