The Lawn on D, an exciting green space located adjacent to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC), celebrated its second season this past weekend with a fun and festive season opener. Some hallmarks of the highly-attended event were the unveiling of the solar-powered Swing Time 2.0, musical and theatrical performances, and many food and drink options. Visit the Lawn on D's website for the season's event schedule, full of exciting highlights such as a performance by Passion Pit, a massive inflatable tunnel labyrinth, and rotating installations by D Street ArtLAB.
Completed in spring 2014, the Lawn on D was conceived as a temporary space to pilot the ambitions of D Street, which is positioned advantageously among several fast-growing neighborhoods. Envisioned as an active, inclusive, experimental, and art-filled space, Lawn on D provides a much needed green space where many communities can come together. This project has served as an eye-catching catalyst, filling the area's need for an outdoor program space. Indicative of success, we are honored to announce that the Lawn on D was recently awarded the AIA National Small Project Award, as well as the BSLA Honor Award for Design. In particular, the AIA jury commended the project for its "simple interventions such as color, furniture, and lighting [which] completely transformed the site into one that engages the community and is alive."
"It was an inspiring project to be part of and we found working with the MCCA on this experimental green space a true pleasure," says Sasaki principal Fred Merrill, FAICP, LEED® AP, lead planner on the project. "The MCCA was a bold, forward-thinking leader and the quality of the Lawn on D design directly resulted from the trust they placed in our team to deliver a new kind of urban space for Boston. The degree of positive feedback and excitement from the community over the last year has far exceeded our expectations."
Sasaki principal Gina Ford, ASLA, the lead designer on the project adds, "We are honored to have led the design of the Lawn on D under MCCA's stewardship. I speak for the whole design team in saying it's exceedingly gratifying to be able to call the Lawn on D an award-winning project."
On Tuesday, May 19, from 5-7:30 p.m., join the Sasaki Design team and SEGD Boston Chapter for a Spring Social event and tour of the Lawn on D. For more information, click here.
