East Bell Commons Framework Plan Honored by University Circle, Inc.

Sasaki is pleased to announce our work on the East Bell Commons Framework Plan has been honored with a “Building the Circle” Award from University Circle Inc. (UCI).

Sasaki landscape architect Matt Langan accepted the award on Sasaki’s behalf at UCI’s Annual Meeting on November 13, 2019. UCI is a cultural hub in Cleveland, Ohio dedicated to serving the community through accessible public space and amenities.

In 2018, Sasaki was commissioned by a joint task force of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) representatives to develop a landscape plan that represents the institutions’ shared interests in the redevelopment of the property that they purchased together in 2014.

The plan frames and extends CWRU’s historic Mather Quad with a new promenade that provides a direct connection between CWRU’s University Center and CMA’s main entrance. The plan also identifies a broader temporary open space that will become a redevelopment site for new facilities with arts and humanities programs that support each institution’s mission.

This landscape, completed in 2019, builds on a series of contiguous and cohesive open space projects that Sasaki has designed in Cleveland’s University Circle District in recent years, including the Nord Family Greenway, which won a “Building the Circle” award in 2018.
