Zhang on AIA Shanghai Urbanization Panel

Last month, Dou Zhang, ASLA, co-director of the Sasaki Shanghai office, contributed to the panel discussion “Town Planning for Reverse Urbanization”, organized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Shanghai. The panel discussion focused on China’s “third phase of urbanization,” which, according to the organizers, is “creating a higher quality of life in our towns and villages.”

Zhang’s presentation, “Rediscover the Beauty of the Countryside,” explored the implications of China’s growing eco-tourism industry on the country’s small towns and villages. Drawing from Sasaki’s work on the village of Hesilu, Zhang referenced the importance of creating tourism with multiple benefits, so that the village economy could prosper and villagers can sustain the contemporary life style.
